Do you notice that there is a lot of summer stress about, even though you are meant to be chilling with the family? Summer is supposed to feel lighter, easier, and more spacious. Yet for so many women, it doesn’t feel that way at all.

Instead, it can bring more demands on your time with summer camps, trips away and sleep overs as well as disrupted routines knocking you and the children out of sync, with you experiencing emotional and mental overload as you try to manage the different demands, and a quiet sense of exhaustion that doesn’t seem to lift.

If this resonates, you are not alone — and there is nothing wrong with you. Simply put, you are not getting a break. Instead you are expected to step up a notch, like shifting gears in the same rat race but in a different season!

There can be an unspoken expectation that summer should feel joyful, carefree, and energising. But in reality, many women experience:

- increased childcare or family responsibilities - it is always a juggling act, can you afford to leave the children in childcare or do you take them out for the summer and try and manage. This can also be a financially directed decision.

- changes in structure that remove the stability that is found in daily normality, as plans can ever evolve over the summer months

- pressure to “make the most of everything”

- less downtime than expected as you meet everyone else's need to enjoy summer

This creates a subtle tension: You’re meant to feel relaxed, but your body hasn't got the memo. You end up being the one who has to re-arrange the whole routines.
